Furthermore, if you don't mind hopping in the car for a quick trip, you can make your way to famous Maho Beach, which you may have seen all over Instagram. Here, planes fly extraordinarily low over the beach in order to reach the landing strip at Princess Juliana International. When it comes to dining in Terres Basses, if you head slightly south and cross the border into Sint Maarten, you will find a plethora of wonderful eateries between Cupecoy Beach and Mullet Bay Beach. You will also find the Italian restaurant Mama, and the Argentinian inspired Cambuci in the same area. A little further along towards Mullet Bay Beach, Yami Sushi is the place to go if you fancy some Asian cuisine, and you will find another Italian, Spaghetti House, here too.

Airports

Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) is the main airport on Saint Martin and is located on the Dutch side of the island, 7km from Terres Basses (15 minutes' drive). On the French side of the Island, Grand Case-Espérance Airport (SFG) is 14.9km from Terres Basses (33 minutes' drive). This airport mainly services regional passengers flying to Guadeloupe and Saint Barth, as well as private aircraft.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available at both the Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) and the cruise ship facility. While they are unmetered, all taxis on the island must adhere to official taxi travel rates, ensuring fair pricing. It's important to note that Uber is not operational on Saint Martin.

Buses

For an inexpensive way to explore the island, the reliable and frequent bus service is an excellent choice. Buses offer a convenient means of transportation, allowing travelers to experience the local culture and attractions without breaking the bank.

Driving

Driving is also an option for those seeking more autonomy in their travels. There is one primary road encircling Saint Martin, along with secondary roads leading to residential areas. Be prepared for narrow main roads, which can lead to occasional traffic congestion. Remember that cars drive on the right-hand side, and a crucial traffic rule is to yield the right-of-way to traffic coming from the right. For driving on the island, you'll need either a French or an International Driver's License.

Car hire

If you prefer the freedom to set your own itinerary, you'll find a variety of reputable car hire companies on Saint Martin. Renting a car is a popular choice among tourists, as it grants you the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace, ensuring an unforgettable vacation experience!

Terres Basses is beautiful year-round, but it truly comes into its own between December and April. During this time, days are bright and sunny, rainfall is low, and gentle sea breezes keep the air comfortable—perfect for long beach days, lazy afternoons by the pool, and evenings spent outdoors.

If you prefer a calmer, more laid-back feel, the months just outside peak season are a great choice. The island is greener, the pace is slower, and the warm sea makes swimming and boating especially enjoyable, all while avoiding the busiest crowds.

Later in the year, Terres Basses becomes wonderfully quiet. While brief tropical showers can occur, they’re often short-lived and followed by sunshine. This is an ideal time for travelers who value privacy, space, and a peaceful escape in one of Saint Martin’s most exclusive coastal settings.
